In the planning of a sixth edition, Avery and Taeusch recruited Roberta Ballard, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California to become a co-editor and to help recruit a new group of contributors. We agreed to maintain a strong clinical emphasis but wanted to emphasise some of the basic biologic concepts that elucidate the pathophysiology of disease and direct present and future therapy. Much of the new science and technology of the 70s and 80s has been applied to the benefit of low-birth-weight infants, with an ever-greater reduction in their rates of mortality ad morbidity. This trend also resulted from the explosion of information regarding prenatal diagnosis.
